Intelligent Help: Available and Timely?

For most students, the serious learning occurs when solving practice problems for themselves. The instructor usually can't be present, but software can emulate a conscientious instructor's intelligent help by:

  • Monitoring each step of each student's problem solutions.
  • Flagging any incorrect step upon entry.
  • Suggesting a suitable type of next step, and providing it if requested.
  • Altering its suggested strategy appropriately if a student uses a nonstandard solution method.
  • Reviewing prerequisite skills as indicated by entry of incorrect steps.

Help must be timely!
Short-answer and multiple-choice problem formats make timely help impossible.
Showing a stored solution after an incorrect final answer is too little, and much too late.
Workbooks offer stored solutions. No conscientious instructor would settle for that.
